Official Moving Day

Though we had started moving on Monday (a week ago Monday, August 21st), the movers came on Wednesday to move furniture and boxes. It didn’t start out well. First, they were very late getting started.

Then, they stood around complaining about the first piece of furniture they had to move. When we purchased this armoire for our bedroom, it wouldn’t go through the bedroom door because of a tight turn necessary once you get in the door. So, a glass guy had to remove the window over the bathtub, and they brought it in through the backyard. (I counseled just returning it–I was voted down by a count of Holly (yes) to Chris (no) for keeping it–and so goes life.)

So upon moving, she brought a glass guy to remove the window again to allow the movers to take it out that way. Instead, the movers decided to stand around complaining about how crazy this was (agreed, but that’s what we’re paying you for). The day went downhill from there.

It took four hours longer than estimated, and they weren’t even putting things were they belonged. By 9 p.m., they barely moved things across the threshold. And, of course, every day were notice more furniture that they significantly damaged–all without telling us–including the contentious armoire.

My suggestion would be to never, ever use Delicate Moving (a quick google search finds that reviews on them are mixed).

  1. [...] But with every day of unpacking comes the increasing irritation at (In)Delicate Moving http://ninophile.wordpress.com/2006/09/03/official-moving-day/. The complete destruction they wrought has still not be fully discovered–but the record is pretty daunting so far. Even though the movers wrapped all the furniture in blankets and used shrinkwrap, it had to have been a ruse. One would be hard pressed to find a single piece of furniture that escaped damage, much of it significant. [...]
