Holly and I (mostly Holly) have long had an aversion to having pets. But at Farmington, our neighbors have a cat, Burger, that spends a lot of time on our property. Emma and Layla have absolutely loved having Burger around. They rush out to the porch or the deck to pet him whenever he’s around. Of course, he often jumps appears in a window–freaking out whomever is near.

(We also have a ton of squirrels. You can often find the girls watching squirrels outside their bedroom windows.)
But don’t think this has softened Holly’s stance on pets–Burger is absolutely prohibited from entering the house. On Official Moving Day, while the door was open all day, Burger did manage to get into the house a few times. About midnight, I found him coming out of Layla and Emma’s room. The next night, they both stayed awake looking for Burger and were afraid that he would come in and do something to them.
The other day, Emma, Layla, and I were talking about Burger and how cool it was to “have” a cat–especially one we didn’t really have to take care of. Emma said, “We need a free dog, too.”
