Boomer Sooner: Speed’s First OU/TX Game [OU]

Saturday was Speed’s first trip to the OU/TX game at the Cotton Bowl–in the parlance of our time, the AT&T Red River Shootout Rivalry (*cringe*). It was a hot, muggy morning and early afternoon, and it drizzled for a bit. We walked through the Texas State Fair for a bit, sampling a fried coke (not bad) and waiting in a ridiculous line at Fletcher’s Corny Dog before moving on to find out seats.

The Cotton Bowl remains the host of the game--for now

I started looking for tickets a couple of weeks ago, but they were very overpriced. With both teams losing last week, prices came down quite a bit this week. Still, most of the reasonably priced tickets were on the Texas side–no thanks. On Friday, I finally found some decently priced Oklahoma side tickets. They were essentially on the goalline, but one row from the top of the stadium. And they had a bit of an obstructed view looking towards the far 10-20 yardlines. Anyway, we made it!

Final preparations

And then the Sooners emerged from the tunnel:

And then it was time for the game to commence. Always tense the first few minutes.

The first quarter went well. OU was up 7-0 at the end.

The second quarter didn’t go so well. OU couldn’t cover the tight end to save their lives. Tied 14-14 at half.

I realized about this time that I have no idea when the last time I was on a Ferris Wheel

The third quarter opened with OU still unable to cover the tight end, nevertheless, we were up 21-14 at the end of the third on DeMarco Murray’s 65-yard TD run.

OU took a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter off a long pass from Sam Bradford–just before he got creamed–to a wide open Malcolm Kelly. With less than thirty seconds to go, OU was faced with a tough decision: fourth down from the Texas 21. A field goal seals the win; a pooch punt makes a tying drive nearly impossible. OU kicked the field goal–and missed. I might have blacked out, but when I next observed my surroundings, we had won 28-21. Boomer Sooner!

I managed to get a Fletcher’s Corny Dog before we got drenched. I’ll take the rain for a win.
