Last Friday afternoon, Holly took Emma to a birthday party at a roller skate rink. When the invitation arrived, Emma was very excited as the birthday girl was on her soccer team. But when she and Holly arrived at the rink, they didn’t see the birthday girl–or anyone from the soccer team or even Emma’s school. In fact, everyone who even looked familiar was from the school Emma went to last year. Holly thought that odd.
So she talked to one of the mom’s about how they knew the birthday girl (who still hadn’t been seen). The mom responded that they went to school–Emma’s old school–with the birthday girl. And then she mentioned about how the birthday girl had invited everyone in first grade, which is odd. Even more odd is the fact that they used the directory from kindergarten.
So, Holly and Emma are attending a birthday party for a girl that they do not know and to which they have absolutely no connection. (Holly asked me later: “Isn’t the invitees responsibility to make sure they know the people are inviting?” Apparently not.) When Holly attempted to explain to Emma (who was more walker skating than roller skating) that this was not a birthday party for the girl they had thought (or even knew), Emma did her Tink-thing–adamantly refusing to believe Holly and insisting that her friend was simply 20 minutes late to her own party. She was so adamant that she became upset and stopped skating.
Holly and Emma left soon after. They did leave the present behind–though Holly did consider bringing it home.
