On Saturday night, we prepared for Halloween. As we are very non-iconoclastic people, our preparations are relatively simple. Layla started off by attending a Halloween-themed birthday party (our second such party this month). This year Layla is a witch, our first ever witch, though I’m not sure which way that cuts.

Another first this year is that everyone carved their own pumpkin. Emma designed her own, and I helped her carve it. Madysen did her’s all by herself, and Layla and Speed used guides to help them carve out their designs. Before revealing who did what, here are the completed pumpkins.

So from left to right, we have Speed’s, Layla’s, Emma’s, and Madysen’s. Madysen, who–being 14–thinks the world and specifically her mother are always out to get her, was irritated that her candle was the dimmest.
After Emma finished with her pumpkin, she got out the hula hoop and did her thing. She is quite good. Back when she was 8, I remember Madysen hooping for fifteen minutes straight. Emma’s not quite that good–yet.
Layla filmed a couple of attempts and had Emma incorporating tricks into her hooping.
