Texas Cup: Cold Freaking Soccer Games [Madysen]

Texas Cup Because it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving weekend without soccer, I’m so excited to report that Madysen got to play in the her club’s tournament–the Texas Cup. Sthing White 93 hasn’t won a game since Labor Day at the Atlanta Cup, and they won’t have another game until March, so I was hoping they’d end 2007 on a good note.

Their first game was at 8 a.m. on Friday morning against a Southern California team, Rancho Santa Fe Attack G92 Green. While the weather has been beautiful around here, it turned really cold on Thanksgiving and was much too cold to take pictures on Friday morning. All the girls’ legs were bright red. Rancho was a quality team, and White played pretty well winning 2-0. Madysen had terrible trouble keeping her socks up.

Their second game was at 1 p.m. on Friday against a local team, Sting West Royal 93. By then, the sun had peaked out and the wind died down a bit, so it was much more player (and spectator) friendly. White won 3-0–are you kidding me? A two game winning streak?

My camera had issues

The final bracket game was at (again) 8 a.m. on Saturday against West Side Soccer El Paso Storm. The weather had turned worse over night–hardly seemed possible–adding sleeting rain to the extreme cold and high winds. They had already clinched a spot in the next round, and they only needed to score one goal to clinch first place in the bracket (El Paso had already been eliminated). They scored relatively early, and from that point on the parents were more than ready to call the game and get warm. They possessed the ball more than 75% and won 4-0. Madysen missed an open goal late in the game–blaming the miss on a failure to feel her feet. Weak!

In the second half, White donned their warm-up pants. Now this may seem harsh, but the Nino family does not suffer pants-wearing soccer players. I am now forced to turn my back on Madysen’s soccer career. Sad, really.

Having won their bracket, they were set to play in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. (!) on Sunday. But with the constant rain on Saturday, the remaining tournament games were cancelled. Too bad, except that now I don’t have to freeze my tail off Sunday morning.
