Last weekend, I was shocked when Speed uttered a question I never thought I’d hear: “Dad, can we go to the Art Museum this week?” Nearly as surprising was the reason he wanted to go–he could get extra credit for writing a paragraph about one of the exhibits. So Speed is willing to do extra school work, which requires a trip to the Dallas Museum of Art? Wonders never cease.
I had been meaning to visit the Museum to see a couple of exhibits, so Speed, Madysen, and I went on Thursday night. For Speed’s extra credit, we experienced Bluebonnets and Beyond: Julian Onderdonk, American Impressionist. Julian Onderdonk spent quite a bit of time in Texas painting bluebonnets (the Texas state flower) and other Texas scenes. My two favorites from the exhibit:
Untitled (Field of Bluebonnets), no date

Bluffs on the Guadalupe River, 17 miles above Kerrville, Texas, 1921
Of even more interest to me was the J.M.W. Turner exhibition. J.M.W. Turner was British landscape artist of the first half of the 19th Century. He is now regarded as a very significant artist. Again, my favorites:

The Battle of Trafalgar, 1822

Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus, 1823

The Field of Waterloo, 1818
So I did my part; we’ll see if Speed actually does the remainder to get the (needed) extra credit.
The Turner show was great. Good taste in paintings, NP. Link
