You may recall that Madysen did pretty well in her first year of track, way back in 7th grade. 8th grade didn’t go as well, largely because they wouldn’t let her run in the events that she wanted to run in. Instead, putting her in events that the team was weakest in. (Following that, she didn’t even run track this year.) And Speed didn’t do that great this year in 7th grade–in part because they let him run in the events he wanted to run in–instead of moving the boys around like they did with Madysen. Odd.
Anyway, all that to say that Layla participated in track and field this spring. On Saturday morning, Layla had her first and only meet of the year. She participated in the 100M, 200M, and high jump.
First up was the 100M. There must have been fifteen or more heats in the 100M. Layla better than I expected finishing second in her heat–not quite fast enough to qualify for the final.

And they're off (Layla in the middle)

Layla is not pictured here because she was out in front of this group--too fast for me
Not nearly as many girls ran the 200M. But after watching them all, I can tell you that 200M is a long way for third grade girls. Again, Layla finished second though she led the race most of the way. Not enough left in the tank at the end.

Just after the start, she is gaining

In first place at this point

Still in first place (on the far right) but the girl in lane one (red penny, white shorts) actually won the heat
Okay, so after two pretty successful track events, the high jump was up. I had watched her at practices, and I thought this would be her best event. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way. She easily cleared her practice jump. But then she fouled on her first try by jumping off of two feet (she did clear the bar). On her second (and last) attempt, she again fouled and knocked over the bar. Too bad, though she wasn’t too upset about it.

Her approach on the practice jump

Success!

Her first attempt

Over the bar but fouled

Her second attempt

Foul and bar
