That Could Have Gone Better: Varsity Soccer [Madysen]

images.jpegWell, it’s over. I won’t say it wasn’t an exciting ending, but it definitely ended too soon. Monday night, Madysen and the Lady Scots were matched up in the regional quarterfinals against Frisco Wakeland.

Despite HP’s near dominance of scoring chances (something like 27 shots to 6 for Wakeland), no goals were to be had. So they played two 10-minute overtime periods–and still no goals. On to a shootout we went–and through five shooters, the sides were tied at 3. So it went to a sudden death round where Wakeland converted and HP did not.

And it’s over. Just like that.

(An aside: You know how much I hate obnoxious people. Well, during the shootout, one Wakeland parent went beyond sportsmanlike behavior in my mind. When our shooters were getting ready to take their shot, he would yell negative things about our shooters–”She’s going to miss.” “She’ll never make it.” That sort of thing. Dumb but not beyond the pale. Then during the attempt–in a shootout, you get five (I think) seconds to dribble up and score–while the entire rest of the stadium was void of any sound, he would yell (he was loud too) to try to distract the HP shooter. Now I’m unpersuaded that this really has any impact. But he thought it might (and he was perfectly quiet while Wakeland shot), and that’s what bugs me. I just don’t understand the need to go beyond cheering for your team. It’s not like this is Oklahoma football. That matters.)

They finished with an impressive record (19-6-4, I think), but they didn’t get any further in the playoffs than last year. The expectations were greater, so that’s awfully disappointing.

Until next year, I guess.
