Track Team Assemble! [Running]

An overcast, surprisingly pleasant Saturday morning in mid May was the setting for this year’s PCYMCA track meet. This was Emma’s first time, Layla’s third (3rd grade/4th grade). Somehow, I found myself  with Emma at the SMU track at 8 a.m. for the 3rd grade events.

Not much of a warm-up for the Bradfield team

Everyone can be in up to three events, two track and one field. First up for Emma was the 100M. I’m not sure I’d ever seen Emma sprint, so I wasn’t sure what I’d see. And then she won her heat–color me shocked (pretty sure it was a slow heat, but still). No idea where she stood overall, but she wasn’t one of the 8 finalist.

Blazing down while eyeing the track

Next was the 50M. Her heat essentially finished in an 8-way tie.

Ready, set, watch the gun go off

And she's off

Then her field event–the long jump. From where the parents had to sit, I couldn’t see anything of what was going on, but a friend got this great photo of her mid-air.

[Insert Superman/Tarzan pun

Emma’s favorite event was the 100M, I’m guessing because she won her heat. Her team finished in 2d place (out of 6 teams). She had fun.

About the time Emma was finishing, the 5th grade meet was getting underway. First event was the long jump. Again, I had no idea what was happening, but we later learned that she placed 4th overall. I was impressed.

4th Place Approach?

Her second event was the 100M. Like Emma, Layla won her heat pretty handily. She was only the 13th fastest, so she missed out on the finals.

Chopping wood?

Her last event was the 200M, which had been her best event in practice, so I think she was expecting to do pretty well. But she was on the far outside lane, and she had a tender hamstring, and she didn’t run that great. Oh well.

200M is a long way in my book

She was also an alternate for the relays (I suspect because her hamstring kept her out of a couple practices) but wasn’t needed. Overall, pretty good I’d say. Her team finished 3rd out of 4 teams.
