Over the last several years, I have lamented not having put all of the kids in individual sports. Team sports have their place, but parents and their kids really soil the experience for me. With Layla, we tried both tennis and swimming, but dance crowded them out–and she wasn’t that excited about either anyway.
For Emma, she does some team sports but not that seriously. She has been taking tennis lessons for a while now. And Sunday was her first ever match. It was awesome to watch. Just imagine–no parents yelling endlessly at the kids, coaches, or referees about what a bad job they are doing. It’s almost too good to believe.
And I recorded the entire 20 minute match. This being her first match, she was a little in the dark about scoring, the ad and deuce courts, and etiquette. And she just started practicing her serve last week. Other than that, she’s a veteran.
She lost the match 5 games to 0, but, other than serving, she did pretty well. Several times they had a pretty decent volley going. I’m looking forward to many more of these afternoons.
